Guess who tried to walk to a museum that is closed on Tuesdays.... E for effort!
...
These four photos were taken during the Greek Changing of the Guard in front of the Parliament building in Athens. This ceremony happens every hour, on the hour in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, almost exactly like the one in Arlington National Cemetary. Their uniform is a traditional summer one made of cotton that is fairly light, and their shoes have small metal indentions in them, making a clicking sound as they march. Visitors can take photos next to the guards one at a time, just like those in London. Quite a cool tradition!
We've made it to the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio! You'll see from the photos why it's dedicated to him.
This temple, dedicated to Poseidon (Greek god of the sea), sits on a cliff about 60m from the Aegean. Built possibly in the 400s BC (as dated by the Kouroi statue we saw yesterday in the museum), it was built in the Doric style with the columns smoothly transitioning into the capital, a pretty swift transition for the times. It's pretty clear why the Greeks built this temple in this location (and we felt Poseidon's wrath with the wind and white-capped seas.
And now for the HIGHLIGHTS!
Poseidon, give it a rest!
