Day 23- Last Day on Crete!

Today is our last day here on Crete! Since we'll be on a ferry back to the mainland tonight, we will not have any Wifi, so you can expect two posts come Monday afternoon in the US. See you then!

Our first stop was to the Greco-Roman city of Gortina, which was first excavated in 1884 and still continues today. This city dates originally to the 11th century BC at the top of the hill, called the Acropolis. By the 7th century, the city had moved down the hill to its current position. These photos are from the Roman Odeion, the old Bouleuterion from the Greek culture.

Though it's hard to see, this is a photo of the oldest Greek classical period law code in the world. It is showcases behind the Odeion in the restored brick building.

With its shallow design and spouted shape, this is an olive press from Roman times. Another stone would have been used to mash the olives for their oil and it would have run from the circular grove, down the spout, and into another vessel.

Andrew being a statue...

This is the Temple of Pirina, located on top of mini mountain where we could see for miles around. The five of us are standing where columns would have been placed to hold up the roof of the structure. Another statue of two women seated across from one another was also excavated from here and now is housed in the Heraklion museum.

And the views from our hike:

And now for the HIGHLIGHTS!

At lunch this afternoon we (attemped to) danced to traditional Greek music. Some of us were better than others, but we all had a blast!
